Themost treasured memory of my childhood is of the spring festival. When I was still little, our two big families would gather around the round table on New Year's Eve,discussing our regrets in the previous year andmakingwishes for the next year.We kids would be setting out fireworks and receiving red packets from the elders. That was the sweetest moment that I could have ever thought of.But last year, everything turned out to be different.
We were stuck athome, unable to jog or take awalk around the park, unable to hang outwith friends or relatives, and even unable take offmasks in public. We felt powerless in the face of the pandemic. This remindedme of a very similar image in amovie:When external forces are powerful enough to destroy our species, what can we do to fight for the survival for humanity?Should we surrender to our fate or we stand up together and fight for the last hope?
This is the setting depicted in“TheWandering Earth”,amovie that has grossed 300 million dollars in China during its premier week alone. In 2019,audiences were amazed by the thrilling technologies and ingenious design, but few had realized that this fictional tale could wind up beings very similar to our own fate. And one year later,in 2020,we human beings were faced with this similar global challenge—the pandemic.
You may wonder:what's the big deal?It would take another billions of years for our sun to age and decay and then people might come up with amuch more feasible solution than wandering with the earth. The same, the pandemic right now has been eased and contained. But the problem is:long before the next crisis could even happen, the earth might have been destroyed several times over thanks to the accumulation of our deeds. We cannot trace the origin of this vicious circle, but undoubtedly,we are inseparably linked to it.
The pandemic is not just a single case. Our planet is warming with devastating consequences.Be it optimistic or not, that is an acknowledged fact, which is impacting the lives of numerable species, right here, right now.According to a survey released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, more than 15,000 endangered species are on the brick of dying out.Compared to that of the natural elimination, the speed of extinction has rocketed to 1,000 times faster than normal. We have come to an epoch which is entitled with a shuddering name:The Sixth Extinctions.
Furthermore, when the pandemic was ravaging,it also seriously impacted other sectors. We came to realize that it is not just a health crisis, but also an economic crisis,an education crisis,an inequality crisis, and the list goes on.
The good news, however,is that oftentimes after having exhausted every other option,we tend to do what is right. That is the time when the solidarity of humans falls into place,as what Rousseau had foreseen more than two centuries ago:“Men cannot generate new strength, but only unify and control the forces already existing, and the totality of forces can be formed only by the collaboration of a number of persons.”
At first, there were certain countries requiring citizens to wear masks. Then,we saw more countries following the rule because it finally came to our senses that personal freedom is hard to be realized without the guard of collective security.
As a language learner,I believed in facts rather than rumors.I believe in collaboration rather than isolation. We should stop any form of discrimination and prejudice. We should seek the common ground thatwe all share. And in order to achieve that,we need to start from ourselves, giving speeches, sending out leaflets, writing essays or just telling people around you what you think is right and wrong.
Last year, even though our two big families were stuck at home,we feltno less exhilarated. We recorded videos of our banquet and posted them into We Chat groups;we made phone calls to our loved ones to talk, and we kidswere able to receive the red packets from the elders online.Physical distance cannot prevent us from reaching love and humanity. And in the face of crisis, love and humanity will alwayswin.
