Jiufeng Temple

Jiufeng Temple is located in the northern hilltop of Xiaokunshan in Songjiang, which is 54.3 meters high. It is the hometown of two famous writers of the Western Jin dynasty, Lu Ji and Lu Yun, who are praised as “the Jade of the hill”. There are scenic spots like Lus' Reading Place and their cottage, Baiju Spring, and Jiufeng Temple, among others.

Legend has it that in 1648 (Qing), the emperor, on tour in the area, had visited the temple and ordered that it should be turned to face the north, toward the capital. As a result, Abbot Benyue turned the gates and statues around, facing north but without moving one brick or tile, giving the complex a unique look. Inscribed on a board, two pairs of couplets were bestowed upon by Emperor Shunzhi and Emperor Kangxi gifted the temple a tablet as well in 1705. It has been said also that many royal members of the former Ming dynasty took refuge here, adding a sense of mystery to this temple.

Following the Ming and Qing dynasties, the temple flourished but was destroyed soon after the Opium War. During the Japanese invasion of China, it was occupied by the Japanese army and the entire temple was razed to the ground after 1949. In 1998, the main halls and the wing rooms on both sides were renovated. Because Xiaokunshan was the ninth of the nine hills in Songjiang, the temple was named Jiufeng.

Jiufeng Temple is the only temple built on a hill in Shanghai and the main hall still faces south, toward the capital. There is a 500-year-old ancient ginkgo tree preserved with all its twists and turns, having witnessed the long, eventful history of the temple.
